Each summer a delegation of Azerbaijani students comes to Oslo for the famous International Summer School (ISS). This year was not an exception either.  We believe it is a wonderful opportunity for young Azeri students to learn Norwegian experience and then transfer that knowledge back home. They can take a wide range of courses that meet their interests at the University of Oslo (UiO). Especially after the fact that Azerbaijani students are not available for the Quota Scheme scholarships anymore, the student exchanges have been pretty sporadic and we attach a lot of importance to the possible contributions of the ISS.

The culmination of the ISS is no doubt international cultural evening which was held on July 27 this year. With support from NAYO, our bright students led by Sevil Abbaslizada, Mirmehdi Aghazada, Aydan Suleymanzada, Ulkar Aliyeva and Janana Ahmadli (we deeply thank them for their collaboration) came up with an info-stand about Azerbaijan and served national cuisine to the guests and ISS-participants. With their determination and teamwork skills it was no surprise that the section devoted to Azerbaijan got one of the longest queues among tens of nations! 😉 The ceremony continued with music and dances from all over the world later.

We wish them good luck further with their education, look forward to welcoming new students next year and bring a slideshow of pictures from the international cultural evening to your attention (click on the picture if the slideshow does not work):

The Children’s and Youth Assembly (BUT) is a meeting place for all member organizations of LNU – The Norwegian Children and Youth Council and LNU’s supreme body. BUT18 was held in Sundvollen on 20 and 21 April, and all LNU member organizations could participate with two delegates each as a rule of thumb.

Better framework, safe organizations and youth participation in peace processes were key issues during the Children’s and Youth Assembly 2018. But BUT18 was historically special for NAYO. For the first time in our history, Alizamin Jafarli, a representative from NAYO was selected to the Board of LNU! Noteworthy, in March this year another representative from NAYO, Aysu Acar was elected as a board member to UngOrg – Children and Youth Organizations in Oslo which is an important platform for over 50 organizations in Oslo. Congratulations, NAYO!

On April 13-17, 2018 a Norwegian delegation of children and youth organizations took a friendly trip to Ukraine, Kyiv to get to know Ukrainian civil society and find new partners. It is our pleasure to say that our General Manager Alizamin Jafarli joined this trip on behalf of NAYO. To be honest, we were impressed by the determined Ukrainian youth and NGO engagement in spite of all difficulties, challenges, skepticism! We spent very productive 5 days meeting numerous Ukrainian civil society representatives. We all are so appreciative of the hospitality shown by Royal Norwegian Embassy in Kyiv, Norwegian Helsinki Committee, National Youth Council of Ukraine – NYCU, National Children Council of Ukraine, Go Global, Solidarity Youth, Reanimation Package of Reforms, Democratic Youth Alliance and parliament member Mr. Serhiy Leshchenko, European Union Delegation to Ukraine and Mr. Jurgis Vilcinskas.

Furthermore, NAYO particularly enjoyed the meetings with her partner SAMU – Union of Azerbaijani Youth in Ukraine. NAYO General Manager Alizamin Jafarli discussed the cooperation opportunities in the near future with chairman Ilhama Allahverdiyeva and young leaders Orkhan Safarov and Konul Aliyeva. Subsequently, both sides agreed upon a cooperation agreement for stronger relations.

The trip was organized by LNU – the Norwegian Children and Youth Council which is an umbrella organization for shy of one hundred Norwegian children and youth organizations. In the end, we would like to thank the project leaders Erik Scheriner Evans & Hilde Sandvær and our wonderful Norwegian delegation for a wonderful experience. NAYO encourages Norwegian youth to make use of opportunities LNU offers and is ready to help with consultation if needed.

Nowruz means “New Day” and is a New Year’s tradition celebrated by 300 million people worldwide (Black Sea, Balkans, Caucasus, West, Central and South Asia, and Iran). The celebration has its roots thousands of years back to the Zoroastrianism, and is written on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. In Norway, this culture is usually celebrated in a segregated way. This was the first time that Oslo’s Nowruz-celebrating diverse groups came together thanks to NAYOs initiative!

We received around 200 guests from various nationalities including Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Uzbekistan on the Cosmopolite Scene on March 18, 2018. It was a great opportunity to compare Nowruz traditions in different countries. Each of them is unique in its own way. In addition to professional musicians like Alaturka Norwegian-Turkish women’s choir, Nigar Gahramanova, Ashiq Jafar Jafarzadeh with his saz (a musical genre protected by UNESCO as the world’s intangible cultural heritage) and our well-known vocalist Ilham Nazarov from Azerbaijan, young talented artists such as Edwin Knutsen and Aynaz Mouseview on stage. They performed classical masterpieces by Gara Garayev, Vittorio Monti, Henri Frédéric Schopin, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. A poem from our little member Elsay colored event.

Festival participants visited our Nowruz exhibition in the foyer and tasted Nowruz dishes and candy. We received lots of positive feedback after the event and it makes us continue this tradition next year. Here are video and pictures from the event:
